We have a Golden Doodle.
Because he is part Golden Retriever, he is loyal to our family, but the Poodle in him makes him a bit of a scaredy cat. He barks insistently when the door bell rings and when the visitor is let in, he hides behind the legs of closest adult and is as quiet as can be.
He loves us but he is a funny dog.
Last night, he came to me crying. I have 3 boys, so when I hear crying in the middle of the night, it gets me up quick. As a Mom, my first instinct was to think “SICK!” So, I rushed for the back door to let him out to do his thing, but he did not follow me. Instead, he vigilantly cried in my bathroom. My first though,’was he asking to use the tolet?’ Nope, he was telling me that something was behind the door. I tried to call him away, but he would not budge. He just shot me a look that said, “HELP ME!” It was in that moment that I realized that there was a problem behind the door and that he had gotten me and brought me to the door to help him solve the problem.
Being a smart wife, I called for my husband, woke him up, brought him to the bathroom and I asked him to solve the problem behind the door. Was it was a snake, a scorpion or worse, what if it was spider? He was the right person to help solve the problem. Grudgingly, he opened his eyes, pulled away the covers, came to the door and scooted me and the dog back. From the safety of the bedroom, the dog and I watched as he pulled back the door to reveal THE PROBLEM. The one and one half inch family hamster stared back at my husband. Lost in the bathroom, he did not know whether to run left or right so he froze and waited for my husband to make a move. Our hero, returned the scared the hamster to his cage, pet the dog on the head and told me to get back in bed.
I am not sure if the dog was embarrassed or not, but I was grateful! I am so proud that I have a dog that is smart enough to get help when he does not know what to do and I am so happy that I have husband that is brave and is not afraid to push back the door – even when I don’t think I can. I know that these two attributes are the KEYS to solving ANY big or little 1 and 1/2 inch problem.
